Autism: Responding to a global challenge

Autism as an emerging global health challenge where on average nearly 1 out of 88 children are being diagnosed with this disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in the United States 1 in 88 children (1 in 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls) are affected. This means that there are more children affected by autism than are affected by diabetes, AIDS, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic brosis, muscular dystrophy or Down syndrome – combined.
